Eating Healthy after Weight Loss Surgery

What goes into a healthy diet? Take a survey of most people you know and you’ll likely hear the same type of answers on repeat: three square meals a day, filled with plenty of produce and healthy proteins, and absolutely no snacking.

This is the type of dietary plan that many people attempt to start with when they decide to start losing weight, but it doesn’t work. Why not? Because this type of dietary plan, based on restriction of foods throughout the day, leaves you hungry. Hunger interferes with your ability to focus on your work, to have energy to get through the day, but most important, it makes it a lot more difficult to stay positive about your weight loss goals.

Snacking is actually a very important part of any successful weight loss plan. The trick is that those snacks must be just that—planned! Snacking on a whim will lead you to overeat, to indulge in sweets, and to lose track of how many calories you’ve consumed. However, snacking to a plan can help you to stay full and focused all day long, and can keep you on track for weight loss success.

Here are just a few ideas for healthy snacks that you can enjoy as you try to lose weight:

  • Apple slices with a nut butter, such as almond butter or peanut butter
  • Cheese slices
  • Raw nuts
  • Veggies and hummus dip
  • A low-calorie protein shake
  • Greek yogurt

After weight loss surgery, keeping up with healthy snacks is even more important. That is because you won’t be able to enjoy a large meal, as you would have prior to your operation. You’ll grow too full before you can finish it.

Small snacks are much better proportioned to keep you feeling satisfied as you lose weight. Talk with your weight loss surgeon for more tips about the best types of snacks that you should be having following your weight loss procedure.
