Fitness Goals that Move with You

Do you ever find it difficult to find the motivation to get outside and go for your walk? Sure, you’ll feel better when it is over, and you know that walking a couple of miles is good for you and your weight loss goals, but that doesn’t exactly give you the motivation to get it done. After having weight loss surgery, you need to find time to fit in that workout every single day. This means pushing yourself to find new and exciting ways to stay motivated and interested in your workout.

Walking as a tool for exploration is a great way to become more engaged in your workouts, and in your community. Once a week, find a new part of town that you have always been interested in exploring and head there to go for your walk. Park the car, get out, and head out on your walk to check out new landscapes, architecture, or city life. You can map out your walk online before you head out, and even ask a friend to come along to keep you company as you explore. This is a great way to make your walking routine more exciting, and to give you a reason to get out of the house and try something new.

If you are looking for ways to make your workouts a bit more enjoyable and varied, then you may want to consider turning your walking routine into a bit of a game. Write down a few of your favorite walking routines or variations, and put the papers in a bin that you can turn into your workout mixer. Then, when you are getting ready to head out, or looking for a bit of motivation to help you get going, pull at random and see where you end up. You can write things like “take a 30 minute walk through the neighborhood” or “head to the mall and window shop, up and down the stairs!” You may also want to mix it up by adding in a few other variations, like “listen to your audiobook” or “try a new playlist.” Making your walking routine into a game like this can keep you interested as you keep up with your workout plans.

Walking is a great workout to get started with after weight loss surgery, but the more weight you lose, the more ready you may become to take your workout to the next level. If getting creative with your walking routine doesn’t bring the excitement back to your exercise routine, then it may be time to consult with your weight loss surgeon about your next steps in fitness.
